HPEER TIG Week: What’s the Latest in Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research? By Anne Vo, Asma Ali, Jessica Harlan, and Patrick Barlow

Hi! We are Anne Vo (Keck School of Medicine of USC; Co-Program Chair), Asma Ali (AA & Associates; Co-TIG Chair), Jessica Harlan (Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine; Co-TIG Chair), and Patrick Barlow (The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine; Co-Program Chair). We are the Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research (HPEER) TIG’s leadership team.

We write this week to introduce the HPEER TIG and the collection of blog posts that will highlight a variety of program evaluation perspectives and developments in the Health Professions Education (HPE) ecosystem.

About the HPEER TIG

The HPEER TIG had its first Annual Business Meeting at #Eval2018 in Cleveland. Approved by the AEA Board in January 2018, the TIG’s mission is to develop a network of program evaluators working across different areas of HPE to promote greater evaluation quality, relevance, and use. This is done by providing a forum for developing partnerships, scholarly opportunities, and discourse among practitioners in the HPE field (e.g., allied health, dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine).

Latest TIG Happenings

The first meeting of the HPEER TIG took place on November 1, 2018 with over a dozen members. We were pleased to welcome colleagues from undergraduate and graduate medical education programs along with colleagues from dentistry, nursing, continuing medical education, and veterinary medicine. Attendees brainstormed about TIG goals for the year and future opportunities in HPE. The session ended with networking among TIG members and planning for the upcoming TIG Week on the blog.

On the AEA365 Blog This Week

Since the HPEER TIG strives to promote identification of best practices that have inter-professional relevance across HPE and to provide opportunities for partnerships, this week’s AEA365 blog posts represent one of our efforts to build community in these arenas. Contributions are from our TIG members and others in the HPE space who are not yet AEA members.

Hot Tip: Educational evaluation and research in HPE isn’t necessarily new. But, evaluative thinking and evaluation culture in this community is ever evolving. Be sure to keep an eye out for the suggested Rad Resources in this week’s posts to learn more and enter the conversation more productively!

The American Evaluation Association is celebrating Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research (HPEER) TIG Week with our colleagues in the Health Professions Education Evaluation and Research Topical Interest Group. The contributions all this week to aea365 come from our HPEER TIG members. Do you have questions, concerns, kudos, or content to extend this aea365 contribution? Please add them in the comments section for this post on the aea365 webpage so that we may enrich our community of practice. Would you like to submit an aea365 Tip? Please send a note of interest to aea365@eval.org. aea365 is sponsored by the American Evaluation Association and provides a Tip-a-Day by and for evaluators.
