Susan Kistler on Taking a Professional Development Break This Summer

I am Susan Kistler, AEA’s Executive Director, and I contribute each Saturday’s post to aea365. Today I want to encourage you to take time out over the coming months to take advantage of some of the great upcoming opportunities for learning face-to-face with evaluation colleagues.

Rad Resource – AEA Events Directory: AEA’s directory lists professional development events offered around the world related to evaluation and evaluation methodologies. At any time, there are usually over 100 event opportunities. Look for the “AEA Event” and “AEA Affiliate Event” notes under particular listings to see those directly sponsored by AEA and its regional affiliates.

These three events may be of particular interest to evaluators working in the US or traveling to the US this summer:

Rad Resource – AEA/CDC Summer Evaluation Institute (June 13-16, Atlanta, GA): You don’t need to be working in health to take advantage of this great 2.5 day event. With over 50 short 90-minute to 3-hour workshops from which to choose, you’ll find something immediately applicable to your practice. Registration is $395 for AEA members and CDC staff, and $445 for other profesionals for the full 2.5 days of training.

Hot Tip: Know colleagues who need to revisit the basics? The one-day Intro to Evaluation and Quantitative Methods for Evaluation workshops that precede the AEA/CDC Institute may be registered for separately and you can attend just the pre-institute workshop if you wish. The one-day pre-conference workshops are $150 each.

Rad Resource – The Evaluators’ Institute (July 12-24, Washington, DC): The Evaluators’ Institute’s summer offering in Washington, DC includes one- two- and three-day sessions. Each workshop explores a topic in-depth, from the basics of sampling, to qualitative and quantitative analysis methods, to evaluation management, to designing impact evaluations. TEI-DC is held at the Park Hyatt in the heart of the city and each workshop may be registered for individually at a cost of $470 for one-day, $850 for two-day, and $1,225 for three-day classes.

Rad Resource – Claremont Professional Development Workshop Series in Evaluation and Applied Research Methods (August 20-23, Claremont, CA): Claremont’s 16 day-long workshops span four days of on-site training and explore topics from multiple regression and survey development to consulting skills and grant proposal writing. You can register for any single workshop or up to four workshops, one per day. Many of the workshops are also available online via distance technology. Registration is $125 per day for professionals.

Hot Tip: Consider your own learning needs, style, and resources. Registration fees and structure vary considerably from program to program as do the length of sessions.

Have a suggestion for other professional development specifically for evaluators? Add it via the online comments and we’ll be sure it gets in the directory!

Please note that AEA does not endorse any specific training beyond its own. The above offerings are provided as examples and you should research any training before attending in order to ensure that it meets your professional development needs.
