Susan Kistler on Inspiration and Education for Data Visualization
I’m Susan Kistler, the American Evaluation Association’s Executive Director and aesa365’s regular Saturday contributor. For those who read regularly, you know of my love of data visualization (DV) – I view it as a key to conveying evaluation information in ways that promote understanding and use. Here are two new items to feed your inner data diva.
Rad Resources for Learning: Thanks to Nathan Yau at the Flowing Data blog, I learned about the new Data Stories podcast from Moritz Stafaner and Enrico Bertini. Stefaner is one of the designers behind the OECD Better Life Index that I have written about before and Stefaner is the author of the Fell in Love with Data blog – another must-read. Their work merges the academic with the aesthetic and tends to the gloriously geeky side of things. Their most recent addition to the biweekly podcast (they are on #5) is “How to Learn Data Visualization (with Andy Kirk)” – well worth a listen.
Rad Resources for Inspiration: Sponsored by the Society for News Design, the Malofiej is the “Infographics World Summit” (really, that’s what they call it). Celebrating 20 years of infographics excellence, the summit brings together designers and media professionals from around the world with a highlight being the Malofiej awards, recognizing “the best infographics published in print and online across the globe.” The Malofiej winners elevate data to an art form. My favorite way to look at each is to ask myself whether accuracy has been sacrificed for aesthetics or whether they have achieved the harmony of both form and function that would be mandated in the evaluation arena. The listing of 2012 winners may be found on the colorful data website, and, if you have an ipad, they announced the free Malofiej app that highlights the gold medal winners from the last 20 years.
The above content reflects my own opinions and not necessarily those of the American Evaluation Association.
